If I was asked what the most commonly eaten food in Nigeria, I would provide an answer based on my experience living in the Southern part of Nigeria. I live mostly in the South West but I've also lived in the South East being and Igbo man, I think I know 3 of the top most popular foods in Southern Nigeria. I've not lived in Northern Nigeria before so I can't exactly speak for them.

If I was asked to provide and answer what the most commonly eaten food is, I would say it is cassava (includes garri, akpu, fufu etc) and the second one would be yam.

As I said, I think it is cassava and the most popular seems to be garri since it has a long shelf life and can be easily eaten but most people serve it cooked with vegetable soups. Akpu or Fufu are also among the most popular foods eaten in Nigeria and they are relatives of garri since they all come from cassava after undergoing some processing.

Igbo people call their brand of cassava meal akpu while in the South West it's commonly called Fufu. It is normally made from cassava which has been boiled and pounded. Garri is normally produced also from cassava but has to be dried and fried for longer storage life. There are brands of garri in the market such as the white or yellow garri. People in the South West prefer the white garri while the yellow garri which is made with palm oil as and additive is preferred by Igbo people.

Another popular food item being eaten by most Nigerians is Yam and most of them are grown in Nigeria. Yams are a profitable agricultural crop which many Nigerian farmers always want to grow although it takes a long time before harvesting.

Both cassava and Yams are the top most commonly eaten foods in Nigeria based on my experience and they are a good source of energy being carbohydrate giving foods. They are normally eaten with vegetable soups which are mostly prepared with palm oil and other ingredients.

What other foods do you think is really among the most popular ones in Nigeria?
